NFL Buckeyes (2017, Divisional Round)

The Final Four of the 2017 NFL Playoffs is set. The New England Patriots will host the Jacksonville Jaguars in the AFC. While the Philadelphia Eagles will host the Minnesota Vikings in NFC. We’ll have to wait another week to find out who will meet up in the Super Bowl in February, regardless we know there will be some Buckeyes playing for the Lombardi trophy.

NFL Buckeyes (2017, Wild Card Weekend)

The 2017 College Football Playoff committee left Ohio State out, we can argue all day if it was the right call (I think it was), but for Scarlet and Gray fans, there are plenty of Buckeyes playing NFL Playoff football and playing well that you can root for.

The New Orleans Quartet of Buckeyes have been leading the way for the Saints all season, and it was no different in the Wild Card round against the Carolina Panthers. Mike Thomas caught 8 passes for 131 yards, and Ted Ginn Junior caught 5 passes for 115 yards and a touchdown in a 31-26 win. Vonn Bell led the way for the defense with 9 total tackles (7 solo), 1 tackles for loss and a game clinching sack on Cam Newton. Rookie Marshon Lattimore made 2 total tackles and broke up 2 passes in his first ever playoff action. The Saints will play at the Minnesota Vikings next week. Panthers’ safety Kurt Coleman played despite an ankle injury.

Adolphus Washington and the Buffalo Bills made their first trip to the playoffs since 1999. Washington made 1 tackle for the Bills in a 10-3 loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Cam Heyward and the Pittsburgh Steelers had the week off, but the 7th year defensive lineman made some headlines. After being snubbed for the Pro Bowl, he was named 1st-team All-Pro for the first time in his career. He’s the only Buckeyes to make either the 1st or 2nd team this season. Pittsburgh will host the Jacksonville Jaguars next Sunday.

There was also encouraging news on Pittsburgh Pro Bowl linebacker Ryan Shazier. His father, Vernon Shazier, told local media in the “Steel City” that Ryan has feeling in his legs. He went on to say that the night of the injury his son told him he couldn’t feel his legs. But, Mr. Shazier went on to say that they will keep the rest of Ryan’s progress private.

NFL Buckeyes (2017, Week 17)

The 2017 NFL season has come to an end and it was a banner year for former several Buckeyes. Ohio State has the most Alumni selected to the Pro Bowl, a few broken individual records, some will be considered for major awards, and others are playing key roles for teams with a shot at hoisting the Lombardi trophy.

With playoff positions already decided Cam Heyward of the Pittsburgh Steelers sat out the 28-24 win over the Cleveland Browns. He finished the regular season with a career high 12 sacks.

Joey Bosa made 5 tackles and had a sack for the Los Angeles Chargers in a 30-10 win over the Oakland Raiders. The reigning Defensive Rookie of the Year finishes the season with 11.5 sacks. However, the Chargers missed the playoffs by a tiebreaker.

Michael Thomas set the New Orleans Saints single season reception record with his 6 catches for 94 yards in a 31-24 loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Thomas also has the most receptions in his first two seasons than any player in NFL history. Ted Ginn Junior caught 3 passes for 33 yards and rushed once for 2 yards. Vonn Bell made 10 total tackles and had a sack, while Marshon Lattimore made 3 tackles in defeat. The New Orleans Saints will host NFC South rival Carolina Panthers in the wild card round.

Ezekiel Elliott ran for 103 yards on 27 carries and caught 3 passes for 38 yards for the Dallas Cowboys in a 6-0 win over the Philadelphia Eagles. Zeke’s six-game suspension kept him from reaching 1,000 rushing yards in his second season. He finished 2017 with 983 rushing yards, 7 touchdowns, 26 receptions for 269 yards and 2 receiving touchdowns. Philadelphia safety Malcolm Jenkins didn’t play in the loss. The Eagles have the number one seed in the NFC playoffs and have a bye next week.

Kurt Coleman didn’t play in the Carolina Panthers 22-10 loss to the Atlanta Falcons. He’s expected to play in the wild card round against the Saints.

Adolphus Washington made 1 tackle for the Buffalo Bills in a 22-16 win over the Miami Dolphins to help end the longest current playoff drought in pro sports (17 seasons).

NFL Buckeyes (2017, Week 15)

The Pittsburgh Steelers placed Ryan Shazier on the injured reserve list. But there is good news to report on the fourth-year linebacker. Shazier has begun the physical rehabilitation process at UPMC. On Sunday Night, he attended the Steelers game against the Patriots and watched from a suite and he saw the “Game of the Season.”
The Steelers’ Cam Heyward recorded his 10th sack of the season, becoming the first Steelers player to reach double figures in sacks since 2010. He finished the game with 2 hits on Tom Brady, 1 tackle, a tackle for loss, and 1 pass breakup in Pittsburgh’s 27-24 loss to the New England Patriots.

On Thursday Night Football, Denver Broncos tight end Jeff Heuerman caught a 54-yard touchdown from Brock Osweiler in their 25-13 win over the Indianapolis Colts. That was his only catch of the game. It was Heuerman’s 2nd touchdown this season. Defensively, Bradley Roby had 1 sack and 1 tackle for the winners. Jonathan Hankins made 5 total tackles, 1 sack and was credited with a half tackle for loss in defeat.

Mike Thomas scored on a 4-yard touchdown catch to help the New Orleans Saints beat the New York Jets 31-19. Thomas finished with 9 receptions for 93 yards. The second-year wideout also made NFL history by being only the second player in league history to catch 90+ passes in his first two seasons. ODell Beckham Junior was the first and has accomplished the feat three consecutive seasons. Marshon Lattimore racked up 5 tackles, 1 for a loss, broke up 3 passes and picked off his 3rd career pass. Dallas gets Ezekiel Elliott back next week from his 6-game suspension. The team went 3-3 without him.

NFL Buckeyes (2017, Week 13)

Week 13 of the NFL season was a bittersweet one for OSU Alumns. While several made key contributions to huge wins, all of Buckeye Nation was somber after seeing one of their own suffer a scary injury.

Pittsburgh Steelers’ linebacker Ryan Shazier laid on the turf for nearly twenty minutes and appeared to lose feeling in his legs after he made his second tackle of the game early in the first quarter against the Cincinnati Bengals on Monday Night Football. Shazier had to be carted off the field and taken to a local hospital for further evaluation. At the time of this post there were no new updates on his current condition.

Meanwhile, less important, Cam Heyward made 1 tackle, a tackle for loss and had a hit on the QB in the 23-20 win for the Steelers over the Bengals.

Philadelphia Eagles Safety Malcolm Jenkins and Seattle Seahawks tight end Nick Vannett met in the middle of the field in the Great Northwest on Sunday Night Football. Jenkins made 4 tackles, while Vannett caught 3 passes for 40 yards in Seattle’s 24-10 win. It was only the Eagles 2nd loss of the season.

Rod Smith continued to get significant playing time with Zeke Elliott still serving his 6-game suspension. Smith carried the ball 10 times for 27 yards and scored on a 1-yard run to help the Dallas Cowboys beat Washington 38-14 on Thursday Night Football. It’s Dallas’ first win since Ezekiel Elliott began his suspension. The touchdown is Smith’s second in his three-year career.
