Cleveland Browns defensive back Denzel Ward continues to impress and improve his case to be the 2018 NFL defensive rookie of the year. He also blocked a field goal attempt and finished with 5 tackles and 3 passes broken up to help Cleveland win 12-9 in overtime. 2018 NFL Buckeyes (Week 3)

Week three of the NFL season saw the arrival of a new Buckeye, while another was apart of a record-breaking day. We start in Northeast Ohio for Thursday Night Football.

Carlos Hyde had an eventful 24 hours. First he rushed for 98 yards and two touchdowns on his 28th birthday to help the Cleveland Browns win 21-17 and get their first victory since December 24th, 2016. Hyde is the first Browns player to rush for a touchdown in the team’s first three games of a season since 2011. He also caught two passes for 5 yards. On Friday Morning, he welcomed a newborn son at 8 pounds and 11 ounces. I expect him to be a member of the 2036 recruiting class at THE Ohio State University.

Back to Thursday night, Browns’ rookie defensive back Denzel Ward made a key strip fumble and recovery to turn the tide in the game. He finished with 4 tackles, one for a loss. On the Jets side, Darron Lee made 7 tackles, two for losses and one QB hit. Terrelle Pryor caught one pass for 25 yards on the night.

New Orleans Saints wide receiver Michael Thomas was apart of another record setting day in Atlanta against the Falcons in the game of the week. Thomas caught Drew Brees’ 6,301-career completion, which surpassed Hall of Famer Brett Favre for the most in NFL history. Thomas, the NFL’s current leading receiver, caught 10 passes for 129 yards in a 43-37 overtime win. The rest of the New Orleans Buckeyes of Ted Ginn Junior, Vonn Bell, Marshon Lattimore and Kurt Coleman played a key role in the victory as well. Ginn only caught 3 passes for 12 yards, but had a 6-yard touchdown catch and one carry for 20 yards. Bell made 5 tackles, while Lattimore and Coleman made 2 each to help the Saints improve to 2-1 on the season.

Dallas Cowboys running back Ezekiel Elliott looked like the “Zeke” that ran the Buckeyes to the 2014 National Championship against the Seattle Seahawks. Elliott carried the ball 16 times for 127 yards and caught 3 passes for 11 yards, but had a key fumble in Dallas’ comeback attempt that fell short 24-13. For Seattle, tight end Nick Vannett caught 4 passes for 27 yards to help the ‘Hawks get their first win of the season.

Miami Dolphins linebackers Jerome Baker and Raekwon McMillian played a huge role in helping their team stay undefeated. Baker had 9 tackles, while McMillian had 4 tackles in the 28-20 win over the Oakland Raiders. 2nd-year defensive back Gareon Conley made two tackles in defeat for Oakland, while defensive tackle Johnathan Hankins made one tackle in the loss. Raiders’ kicker Mike Nugent scored 8 points on two extra points and two field goals, one for 52 yards.

Safety Malik Hooker made 6 tackles and broke up one pass for the Indianapolis Colts in a 20-16 loss to the defending Super Bowl Champion Philadelphia Eagles. His fellow safety on the other sideline, 10-year veteran Malcolm Jenkins, made 4 total tackles and broke up one pass in the win. Denver Broncos tight end Jeff Heuerman caught 2 passes for 7 yards, while cornerback Bradley Roby made 2 tackles in a 27-14 loss to the Baltimore Ravens.

On Sunday night football, offensive lineman Taylor Decker started for the Detroit Lions against the New England Patriots and helped lead the way for Detroit’s first 100-yard rusher since Reggie Bush on Thanksgiving Day 2013 (70 games). Detroit beat the Patriots 26-10. Special teams ace Nate Ebner made 2 total tackles in the loss.

Pittsburgh All-Pro defensive lineman Cam Heyward made 1 tackle, 1 for loss and registered a QB hit to help the Steelers get their first win of the season, 30-27 over the Tampa Buccaneers on Monday Night Football.

Eli Apple missed the New York Giants 27-22 win over the Houston Texans with a groin injury. Cincinnati Bengals center Billy Price missed his first career game, a 31-21 loss to the Carolina Panthers, with a foot injury he suffered in week 2 on Thursday Night Football. Curtis Samuel also missed the Panthers-Bengals game with a chest injury.

NFL Buckeyes (2017, Wild Card Weekend)

The 2017 College Football Playoff committee left Ohio State out, we can argue all day if it was the right call (I think it was), but for Scarlet and Gray fans, there are plenty of Buckeyes playing NFL Playoff football and playing well that you can root for.

The New Orleans Quartet of Buckeyes have been leading the way for the Saints all season, and it was no different in the Wild Card round against the Carolina Panthers. Mike Thomas caught 8 passes for 131 yards, and Ted Ginn Junior caught 5 passes for 115 yards and a touchdown in a 31-26 win. Vonn Bell led the way for the defense with 9 total tackles (7 solo), 1 tackles for loss and a game clinching sack on Cam Newton. Rookie Marshon Lattimore made 2 total tackles and broke up 2 passes in his first ever playoff action. The Saints will play at the Minnesota Vikings next week. Panthers’ safety Kurt Coleman played despite an ankle injury.

Adolphus Washington and the Buffalo Bills made their first trip to the playoffs since 1999. Washington made 1 tackle for the Bills in a 10-3 loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Cam Heyward and the Pittsburgh Steelers had the week off, but the 7th year defensive lineman made some headlines. After being snubbed for the Pro Bowl, he was named 1st-team All-Pro for the first time in his career. He’s the only Buckeyes to make either the 1st or 2nd team this season. Pittsburgh will host the Jacksonville Jaguars next Sunday.

There was also encouraging news on Pittsburgh Pro Bowl linebacker Ryan Shazier. His father, Vernon Shazier, told local media in the “Steel City” that Ryan has feeling in his legs. He went on to say that the night of the injury his son told him he couldn’t feel his legs. But, Mr. Shazier went on to say that they will keep the rest of Ryan’s progress private.

NFL Buckeyes (2017, Week 15)

The Pittsburgh Steelers placed Ryan Shazier on the injured reserve list. But there is good news to report on the fourth-year linebacker. Shazier has begun the physical rehabilitation process at UPMC. On Sunday Night, he attended the Steelers game against the Patriots and watched from a suite and he saw the “Game of the Season.”
The Steelers’ Cam Heyward recorded his 10th sack of the season, becoming the first Steelers player to reach double figures in sacks since 2010. He finished the game with 2 hits on Tom Brady, 1 tackle, a tackle for loss, and 1 pass breakup in Pittsburgh’s 27-24 loss to the New England Patriots.

On Thursday Night Football, Denver Broncos tight end Jeff Heuerman caught a 54-yard touchdown from Brock Osweiler in their 25-13 win over the Indianapolis Colts. That was his only catch of the game. It was Heuerman’s 2nd touchdown this season. Defensively, Bradley Roby had 1 sack and 1 tackle for the winners. Jonathan Hankins made 5 total tackles, 1 sack and was credited with a half tackle for loss in defeat.

Mike Thomas scored on a 4-yard touchdown catch to help the New Orleans Saints beat the New York Jets 31-19. Thomas finished with 9 receptions for 93 yards. The second-year wideout also made NFL history by being only the second player in league history to catch 90+ passes in his first two seasons. ODell Beckham Junior was the first and has accomplished the feat three consecutive seasons. Marshon Lattimore racked up 5 tackles, 1 for a loss, broke up 3 passes and picked off his 3rd career pass. Ted Ginn Junior was held out of the game with a rib injury. Darron Lee made 7 tackles, one for loss in defeat.

Saturday night Joey Bosa made 4 tackles for the LA Chargers in a 30-13 loss to the Kansas City Chiefs at Arrowhead Stadium.

Adolphus Washington registered 3 total tackles for the Buffalo Bills in a 24-16 win over the Miami Dolphins.

Carolina Panthers safety Kurt Coleman made 10 total tackles and broke up a pass in a 31-24 win over the Green Bay Packers.

Carlos Hyde rushed for only 25 yards on 16 carries and caught 2 passes for 14 yards for the San Francisco 49ers in a 25-23 win over the Tennessee Titans.

Rod Smith found the end zone again in a fourth consecutive game for the Dallas Cowboys on Sunday Night Football against the Oakland Raiders. He finished the game with 13 yards on 12 carries and caught 3 passes for 21 yards in the ‘Boys 20-17 win. Noah Brown caught 1 pass for 8 yards in the win. Dallas gets Ezekiel Elliott back next week from his 6-game suspension. The team went 3-3 without him.

NFL Buckeyes (2017, Week 13)

Week 13 of the NFL season was a bittersweet one for OSU Alumns. While several made key contributions to huge wins, all of Buckeye Nation was somber after seeing one of their own suffer a scary injury.

Pittsburgh Steelers’ linebacker Ryan Shazier laid on the turf for nearly twenty minutes and appeared to lose feeling in his legs after he made his second tackle of the game early in the first quarter against the Cincinnati Bengals on Monday Night Football. Shazier had to be carted off the field and taken to a local hospital for further evaluation. At the time of this post there were no new updates on his current condition.

Meanwhile, less important, Cam Heyward made 1 tackle, a tackle for loss and had a hit on the QB in the 23-20 win for the Steelers over the Bengals.

Philadelphia Eagles Safety Malcolm Jenkins and Seattle Seahawks tight end Nick Vannett met in the middle of the field in the Great Northwest on Sunday Night Football. Jenkins made 4 tackles, while Vannett caught 3 passes for 40 yards in Seattle’s 24-10 win. It was only the Eagles 2nd loss of the season.

Rod Smith continued to get significant playing time with Zeke Elliott still serving his 6-game suspension. Smith carried the ball 10 times for 27 yards and scored on a 1-yard run to help the Dallas Cowboys beat Washington 38-14 on Thursday Night Football. It’s Dallas’ first win since Ezekiel Elliott began his suspension. The touchdown is Smith’s second in his three-year career.

Bradley Roby made 4 tackles, broke up 3 passes and recovered a fumble for the Denver Broncos in a 35-9 loss to the Miami Dolphins.

There were six Buckeyes on the field in New Orleans at the Superdome when the Carolina Panthers played the New Orleans Saints. Mike Thomas caught 5 passes for 70 yards and a touchdown for New Orleans in a 31-21 win over the Carolina Panthers. Ted Ginn Junior caught 2 passes for 27 yards and rushed once for 6 yards in the victory. Vonn Bell made 3 tackles for the Saints defense that was without rookie standout Marshon Lattimore for second consecutive game with injury.

Kurt Coleman made six tackles for Carolina in defeat. Rookie Curtis Samuel dressed for the Panthers but didn’t register any stats.

Joey Bosa made 7 tackles, 2 tackles for loss, 1 sacks and a critical forced fumble to thwart a potential Cleveland Browns scoring drive. He now has 11.5 sacks surpassing his defensive rookie of the year total of 10.5.

Carlos Hyde carried the ball 17 for 54 yards and caught 3 passes for 12 yards in the San Francisco 49ers 15-14 win over the Chicago Bears in the “Windy City.” It was only the Niners 2nd win of the season.

Jonathan Hankins made 2 tackles and John Simon had 3 tackles and one for a loss for the Indianapolis Colts in a 30-10 loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Eli Apple didn’t play for the New York Giants in their 24-17 loss to the Oakland Raiders. It was the 3rd consecutive game he has missed.

Linebacker Curtis Grant made 2 tackles in a losing effort. Washington wide receiver Terrelle Pryor did not play and has been placed on injured reserved after having surgery on his ankle. He finishes his first season in the Nation’s Capital with 20 catches for 240 yards and 1 touchdown.

Adolphus Washington had only 1 tackle for the Bills in defeat.

After several appeals and injunctions, Ezekiel Elliott finally began serving his 6-game suspension from the NFL for domestic violence. In his absence his Dallas Cowboys struggled. Rod Smith saw some action in place of Elliott. He carried the ball 3 times for 14 yards and caught 4 passes for 15 yards in the Cowboys 7-27 loss to the Atlanta Falcons. Mike Nugent scored one point on an extra point and missed a 38-yard field goal in his third game with Dallas.
