“I have told you this, so that you might have peace in your heart because of me. While you are in the world you will suffer. But cheer up, I have defeated the world.” John 16:33
I’ve learned that life isn’t about winning, it’s about survival. Everyone is too concerned with getting to the top and being number one, while in the process failing to realize that everything we accomplish here means nothing. We’re just passing through this life. The sooner we grasp that, the better we will be at navigating through this swamp we call Earth.
My father always reminds me of a line he heard from boxer Michael Spinks. Spinks was on the “Tonight Show with Jay Leno” to promote his up coming fight with Heavyweight Champion of the world “Iron Mike” Tyson. During the interview he told Leno he trains two ways for a fight. One, to win the fight. Two, to lose the fight but not get knocked out. To which Leno replied sarcastically “oh you’re going to lose”. Of course the crowd erupted in laughter. Spinks continued, all be-it seriously. What Spinks was trying to say is that when you’re in the fight of your life, you have to be on guard to not take a beating and be able to fight another day. The same thing goes for us as Christians.
My pastor Harold Hudson at Calvary Tremont Missionary Baptist Church in Columbus, Ohio often says nowhere in the Bible does it say being Christian and following Christ would be easy. Therefore we have to learn how to survive the daily haymakers the enemy will throw at us while trying to defeat us on our purpose through this life, trying to keep us on the canvas and at his level. But if we learn to just bob and weave our way through and throw a few shots back, we’ll make it to the final round where VICTORY is decided by the only JUDGE & JURY that matters. GOD. I can honestly say with 100% faith that we will conquer our opponent with the hands of the ALMIGHTY.
“The Lord will fight for you. You need only to be still.” Exodus 14:14
